2023 First Timer Annual Session Scholarship Recipient Reflections

Corinna Gromley, Ohio

I am writing today to thank you for the First Timer’s Scholarship I received to attend the 2023 NEAFCS Conference in Providence, RI. Before receiving the scholarship, I was unsure if I would be able to attend.  This is my first national conference of any kind, and I was welcomed and engaged in conversation with educators from around the country.  Everyone was so very kind and excited to share about their own programming and experiences. Through the concurrent sessions, I was able to take away valuable tools to assist with my own programing back home, from ways to engage my community stakeholders, to increasing program participation.  On top of making national connections, the time with my home state colleagues was valuable because we do not get to connect in-person very often.  I attended the Professional Development committee meeting to learn more about recruiting for webinars and what that process is like.  I am excited to continue my growth as an educator and serve the profession in the coming years.

I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to NEAFCS for allowing me the opportunity to attend the 2023 Annual Session in Providence Rhode Island. The conference provided me with “oceans of opportunities”. I was able to network with colleagues from across the country who inspired me to continue the important work we are doing as FCS professionals. The concurrent sessions were energizing, and the posters were enlightening. During the committee meetings I learned more about the Awards Committee and decided to join the subcommittee for training. Without the opportunity to attend this annual session and all the work and effort put in by NEAFCS and members, I would not have the connections or knowledge that I now have. Thank you again for supporting members. I hope to attend many more annual sessions.

Wow!  What an experience!  Thank you, NEAFCS, for a First Timer Scholarship and the opportunity to attend the 2023 Annual Session in Providence, RI.  I was hired about a year ago as the ICAN supervisor in my county.  I am normally tucked away in my office, working.  So while I was aware of some of what my county extension colleges do, I had no idea of the breadth and depth of the programs and education they can offer.  The variety is amazing and wonderful, and incredibly helpful to those who make avail of the various programs.  I have a little agent envy!  I also learned more about how ICAN fits and operates within the extension program.  I enjoyed meeting other FCS professionals and learning about the programs they provide in their states.  I loved the posters and the various sessions; I wish there was time to attend more.  The entire experience was invaluable and I am looking forward to attending next year’s conference in Tucson, AZ.

I could never have anticipated the grandness of this conference. I was overwhelmed by the number of FCS workers that poured into that place. I learned that we are mighty in impact but also numbers. The conference renewed my faith in humanity; with all of those FCS workers, I know we are making positive impacts in every state, helping families, and shaping the lives of youth in positive ways. It was great to be surrounded by like-minded people, and learn about the different facets of FCS work because no two programs are the same. I loved how the sessions were spaced out; it gave you time for reflection and figuring out ways to apply what you learned. And 45 minutes for a seminar is just the right amount of time before my ADD kicked in. (Ha).  I can't wait until next year.
