The Personal Finance Ecosystem and K-12 Financial Education: Implications for Extension EducatorsPresented by: Hunter Field, Manager Policy and Advocacy, National Endowment for Financial Education; Emma Donahue , Senior Manager Policy and Advocacy, National Endowment for Financial Education Description: This session will be in two parts: the first half focused on the National Endowment for Financial Education’s Personal Finance Ecosystem framework and the second half focused on K-12 financial education’s momentum and possible implications for Extension educators. The Personal Finance Ecosystem (PFE) is a framework that breaks down the factors that affect an individual’s financial well-being. Facilitators will provide an overview of the PFE and how to apply it practically with students or clients. This session will include a tour of recently launched educator tools and mapping exercises. This PFE training will bridge into discussing the recent momentum of K-12 financial education requirements. States are passing financial education requirements tied to high school graduation at an unprecedented rate. While legislation is part of this conversation, it raises many questions about implementing required school personal finance courses. This second half will cover an overview of the national state of K-12 financial education legislation, a landscape analysis of research on K-12 required financial education, and end with a focused discussion on how Extension educators might engage or have already engaged with this changing landscape.
