New Professional Development Opportunities

Joyce Shriner, OH

Are you planning to include some professional development in your 2013 plan of work? Concerned that your budget will not support attendance at an out-of-state conference? Perhaps you’re interested in expanding your overall knowledge. Consider enrolling in the Khan Academy – a free online education provider.

The Khan Academy, located at www.khanacademy.org, has “a library of over 3,500 videos on everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history and hundreds of skills to practice.” Their mission is “to help you learn what you want, when you want, at your own pace.” The non-profit was incorporated in 2008 by Founder and Executive Director Sal Khan as the result of successfully coaching his cousins in math using YouTube . The goal of the Academy is “changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere.” Those who successfully complete lessons are awarded a badge – much like a Scouting achievement patch.

If you want to participate at a different level, the Academy provides opportunities to serve as a volunteer or coach. For more information about this trendy approach to education, visit the Khan Academy web-site.
